ALASKA DROP CAMP CARIBOU HUNTS $3150
Last fall caribou success was down due to a late
migration and extremely hot weather.
Hunters saw more little groups and maybe only up to 100 in 5 days, as
compared to 500 to 1,500 during the 2008 season.
Unguided hunters ran 70 to 75% success compared to normal years of
90%. He also took 20 guided
customers and 18 scored on bulls.
The Western Arctic herd numbers between 450,000
to 600,000. This hunt takes place in Unit 23 and starting in 2010 a second
bull can be taken on a trophy fee. Dates
are late August to late September.
Unguided hunts are priced at $3,150 for one caribou.
This is based on double occupancy, and includes tents, cots, food,
cooking equipment, transportation of meat, capes and antlers back to
Kotzebue.
Guided hunts 2x1 for 5 days is $6,000.
Air support continues monitoring the
migration and his camps are mobile and can be relocated if necessary.
Non-resident hunting license is $86, caribou tag is $325 and wolf tag
is $35. Hunters fly to Anchorage
and then onto Kotzebue where you take a charter for about $500 roundtrip to
camp.
