Moose

Hunt MS250

NORTHWEST TERRITORY
MOOSE AND MOUNTAIN CARIBOU
100 PERCENT PAST YEARS
THE REAL DEAL

Last fall all 5 hunters scored on moose and caribou, best moose taken had a 68 ½-inch spread and overall they averaged over 60 inches.  Moose typically average in the 200 to 210-inch class and sometimes top in the 230’s and mountain caribou in the 370 to 380-inch category, with the best ones grossing well over 400 inches.  In 2012 all 5 moose hunters took home bulls and caribou. 2011 success rate was also 100% on both species. This family run outfit is very personal and continues to run high success quality hunts within their 7,000 square mile concession.  Hunter and guide flies into a remote tent camp where they hike and glass. 9-day backpack hunts from September 10 to 19 guided 1x1 during the rut are $20,000 plus $150 preservation fund, licenses and 2 ½ percent tax and caribou can be added for a trophy fee of $4,500. Once you score the hunter is typically flown back to base camp where you can enjoy a hot shower with cabin accommodations and some fishing for lake trout and grayling. They close their season on September 19 for all hunts due to early winters, so the moose hunts are prime rut. Cliff Graham and Bob Wodzisz have taken moose and caribou with this outfit. Charter flight from Norman Wells is about $1,200.

Bob decided to take this bull with a nice spread after looking over lots of bulls and getting to watch his bull fight with another rival.

One of our guides loading up at Willow Camp for our ride back to the main base camp at Palmer Lake. Game rich country with beautiful scenery.

Everyone including the cook gets into the action when it comes time to flesh and salt a moose cape. It can take about 8 hours to get the cape completed in the field. This is an enjoyable time for the hunter back at camp listening and telling stories over a hot cup of coffee while the gang is working on his antlers and hide.

Flying into the main base camp on Palmer Lake. This camp is really modernized for being in the bush. They built a small hydro plant on the stream by the camp and it services electricity to all the buildings. Nice hot showers and the whole deal. Really a neat place.

Bob Wodzisz, Cliff Graham, Shoshanna Wodzisz and Elston Carter at Palmer Lake with their bulls. 100% success and Shosh was only after a caribou.

Here we are loading up to head home. Notice the skiff of snow already. This is their best and last moose hunt of the season and is the same dates and camp we hunted out of.
