Moose
Hunt MS540
ALASKA PRIVATE CONCESSION
BORDERING THE YUKON
MOOSE AVERAGING 60 INCHES
This outfitter has a 50 square mile private concession
that borders the Yukon
and is almost inaccessible by plane keeping resident hunters out.
He normally trails in a dozen head of horses to operate his hunts,
but in 2013 heavy rains swelled the rivers to an impassible level so they
had to backpack. His 6 moose hunters scored on 5 bulls including a 67-inch
bull and HCU hunter, Alan Henderson, took a 62 incher. The other 3 bulls
were in the mid to upper 50’s. The unsuccessful hunter couldn’t physically
do the hunt. In 2012 the
outfitter hosted 7 moose hunters and 6 took bulls, one archery hunter did
not score. Best bull went 63 inches and 2 more went 60. In 2011 all 6
hunters scored on bulls, including a 65-inch book bull and 2 more at 60 or
better.
Base camp can be anything from a cabin to a 14’ by 16’
wall tent or a 10’ by 10’ bomb shelter, depending on the area to be hunted.
8-day horseback or backpack moose hunt guided 1x1 is priced at
$17,500 and runs from September 1 to 9, 9 to 18 and 18 to 27. He also offers
a less physical lake hunt where they stay in bomb shelters and canoe the
bays. He normally takes one hunter per year here and success has been very
high. Hunters take a charter flight from Fairbanks to Tok for
approximately $950 and the outfitter pays to have you flown from there to
base camp. Grizzly can be added on a $4,500 trophy fee. 2014 is booked full
and only one opening remains for 2015.
