HUNT KANSAS BRUISER
WHITETAILS
ARCHERY $2900 RIFLE $3650
SEPTEMBER MUZZLELOADER $3500
This outfitter continues to take nice bucks on
his 30,000 private acres due to low hunter impact. Most outfitters
make the mistake of starting off with a great piece of property and then
running way too many hunters and in 3 or 4 years it is all shot out.
This outfitter has 30,000
private-acres along the
Caney River
in southeastern Kansas
managed for big deer. It is cattle country and not necessarily
agriculture, but has plenty of acorn producing oak ridges with thick
brushy bottomland.
He will take up to about 14 bowhunters per year and
at press time it was early in the hunt with the best buck scoring 165.
In 2010 his 14 archers took 12 bucks, with 3 grossing 160 Pope and Young
or better and averaging just over 140.
Gun season had not started at press time, but in 2010
they went 10 for 13 including a couple over 150 and a 160-inch.
In 2009 they went 9 for 10, including a 185-inch
deer. In 2008 the best rifle buck grossed 187 and they did take a
200-inch deer a couple years before that. Typically you should get
an opportunity on a 135 to 155-inch deer and a few will get a chance at
the 160 and up class.
Bowhunts start the last week of October and continue
through the rut in November. 5-day hunt, but if you arrive early
in the day you can hunt that evening and he allows you to hunt the
morning of departure so you can get in 6 days. Price is $2,900 and
includes lodging, meals and guide service.
Rifle hunts are $3,650 and start the first Wednesday
in December. The first hunt is 5 days and the second hunt is 6
days.
Muzzleloader hunts should be the real sleeper on this
property in late September or early October. 6 hunting days is
priced at only $3,500 and in-line muzzleloaders with scopes are allowed.
He recently built a new 4,000 square foot lodge that has a big
trophy room, 6 bedrooms, 2 lofts, chef, the whole nine yards. He is
still going to maintain a very limited amount of hunters to insure a
quality hunt. The outfitter takes everything into account when
putting out his hunters, wind, current available food source, travel
routes, that is why he has 28 enclosed stands on stilts with sliding
windows that are totally weatherproof and 78 archery stands from
lock-on, ladder stands or double bull blinds setup for his hunters.
He also maintains 28 feeders on the property. This is a small, but
serious whitetail outfitter that is fanatic on taking trophy quality
bucks and has managed this property for several years. Draw
deadline is May 31 and there are normally tags leftover. License
and tag total about $400, no tax. Hunters fly into
Wichita
or Tulsa
and rent a car. Limited availability.
